Mount Vinson is the highest peak in Antarctica and rises from the remote Ellsworth Mountains roughly 700 nautical miles from the South Pole. The environment is stark, pristine and intensely atmospheric. Climbers are often drawn to Vinson for the chance to experience the interior of the Antarctic as much as for the summit itself. Adventure Consultants has a long history on this mountain and first pioneered guided ascents here in 1990. That depth of experience underpins the structure and safety of the expedition today.
The journey begins in Punta Arenas in southern Chile. From there the team boards a polar-capable aircraft that lands on a blue-ice runway at Union Glacier. This temporary camp serves as the logistical hub for onward travel into the interior. When conditions allow, a Twin Otter transfers the group to Vinson Base Camp where the ascent begins. The climb usually takes five to six days and follows a well-established progression through the lower glacier to High Camp and then on to the summit ridge.
The route is not technically complex. Climbers must be comfortable on fixed lines and confident managing their movement in cold, high-altitude environments. The remoteness and weather are the true challenges. Strong pack fitness is essential because every team member helps transport group equipment and supplies throughout the expedition.
