First summit achieved by Matthias Zurbriggen on January 14, 1897. At 6,961m, it is the highest peak outside Asia. Known as the "Stone Sentinel" in Quechua. Popular high-altitude training ground before Himalayan expeditions. Over 3,500 climbers attempt annually with 30-40% success rate.
