Quick Facts about Russia

Running from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains are home to Russia’s tallest mountains, including all eight of its 5,000ers and 21 of the country’s 26 peaks that reach 4,000 metres (13,100 feet) or more in elevation.
Outside of the Caucasus Range, the rest of Russia’s 4,000ers are found in the remote eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. Many of these mountains are also active volcanoes. Depending on recent activity, some are targets for mountaineers, while others are viewed on various treks of the peninsula.
While mountaineering and trekking is best reserved for the short summer months, most mountainous parts of the country are popular among ski tourers and ski mountaineers in the spring and autumn as well.

How To Get To Russia

Due to Russia’s vast size, there are a number of different starting points for mountaineering and trekking expeditions. Trips to the Caucasus Mountains generally begin with a flight into Mineralnye Vody Airport (MRV). Trips to Kamchatza are likely to begin with a flight to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport (PKC). Guides will usually opt to meet at the airports or surrounding cities and provide transport to the start of the trip.

Weather: Due to its immense size, the weather in Russia varies greatly. However, summer is the warmest time of year in Russia, with average temperatures ranging from low to mid-20s (high 60s to low 70s). Summer is generally the wettest time of year as well.
