Materuni Village is the home of the Chagga tribe and is still an authentic tribal village. On a clear day, views of Kibo peak and Moshi town can be seen from this point. Materuni waterfalls are the main attraction and other attractions include the evergreen landscape, Chagga culture, and scenic view of the area, birds, and some animals such as Colobus monkeys. This booming 80meter waterfall is about 15-kilometers from central Moshi Town. When combined with a coffee tour in the village, along with a taste of Chagga culture and cuisine; it makes for a perfect day trip.
Itinerary
DAY 1: MOSHI/ARUSHA – MATERUNI VILLAGE
The tour starts at the base of the village where after registration at the government office, our guide will give you a brief itinerary about the tour and a 45-minute hike will get you at the base of the waterfall. The walk itself is extremely interesting, as you will see some smaller waterfalls and lots of waterways which are part of the irrigation system of the local farmers who grow coffee, bananas and many other fruits and vegetables The base of the waterfall provides an attractive natural pool so swimsuits will come in handy!
The tour will continue to the coffee plantations. The villagers will demonstrate the process of coffee farming and guide you through the preparation of coffee from a bean to a cup meanwhile the process is accompanied with Chagga songs and dances – a fun way to engage you in a traditional way of making coffee. Following lunch, you will be shown how to make the Kilimanjaro region's popular Banana Beer.
After that, you will take a short climb to the village's highest point, from which you will enjoy astounding views of the entire region as well as a breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We then return to Moshi or Arusha. Materuni Village is a gorgeously verdant place on the outskirts of Moshi.
