DAY 1: ARRIVE IN TANZANIA

This morning we will drive to the village of Nale Moru for the starting point of the Rongai route. The first stage of the trek is through farmland and pine forests. You may have a chance to see the beautiful Colobus monkeys or if you’re lucky enough, elephants or buffalos en route. Our first camp will be the Simba Camp located at the edge of the moorland zone at 2625m.

DAY 2: NALEMORU GATE (1990M) TO SIMBA CAMP (2625M)

We hike from Simba camp up towards Kibo till 3 482m for lunch at First Caves, a distance of 5.8km. After lunch we continued trekking until reaching Kikelewa Camp at about 3679 metres. The views start to open up and you begin to feel you’re on a really big mountain! Water can be found in an obvious stream below the cave, although you might have to wander downhill a way to find a pool or two. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Kikelewa camp.

DAY 3: SIMBA CAMP (2626M) – KIKELEWA CAMP (3679M)

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views of this wilderness area. The vegetation zone ends shortly before you reach your next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area.

DAY 4: KIKELEWA CAVE (3679M) – MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4303M)

After breakfast we head west and continue ascending on the east side of Kibo crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo taking 4 to 5 hours to reach Kibo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo hut. Distance covered: 8km / 5mi

DAY 5: MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4303M) – KIBO HUT (4730M)

You will rise around 23h20, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot.

The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone screens, requiring a great physical and mental effort. This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move slowly. From Gilman’s Point you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa.

Total exhilaration and satisfaction – you made it
Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest at Kibo hot, you gather all your gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours)

DAY 6: KIBO HUT (4730M) – UHURU PEAK (5895M) – HOROMBO HUT (3705M)

After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. It is strongly recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely.

At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman’s Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m), receive gold certificates.

You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner descent bed and celebrations!!

DAY 7: HOROMBO HUT (3705M) – MARANGU GATE (1860M)

The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport.

DAY 8: DEPART TANZANIA

Kilimanjaro

6 Days Rongai Route

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport/ Arusha airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha town; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Day 1: Arrive In Tanzania

We depart Moshi Town for Momella Gate in Arusha National Park for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The hiking trail begins in open grassland with an armed ranger as the possibility of seeing wildlife – giraffe, zebras, antelope, elephant and buffalo – is high. We climb steadily through the rain forest until the reach Miriakamba Huts, situated in a grassy glade.

Day 2: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts

Elevation: 8,250 ft to 11,712 ft
Distance: 8 km

We continue climbing through the rain forest until we enter the heath zone accompanied by giant heather and other moorland vegetation. Along the ridge of the saddle, we have views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Pit. After arriving at Saddle Huts, there is an option to hike to the top of Little Mount Meru for superb views and to further aid acclimatization.

Day 3: Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our climb to the summit. The trail is steep to Rhino Point and then Cobra Point. The path continues along the ridge of ash and rock to the summit – Socialist Peak. Here we enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro and the sunrise before returning to Miriakamba Huts.

Day 4: Saddle Huts to Summit - Summit to Miriakamba Huts

After breakfast you will begin your final descent to Momella gate. You will be using the southern route to descend. During your descent you will pass through the montane forest where you will pass the amazing Fig Tree Arch. Upon arrival at the Momella gate, you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel.

Day 5: Miriakamba Huts to Momella Gate

Meru

4 Days Mount Meru

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania

The drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate takes about 1 hrs. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. As we leave the park gate, we walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1790m) To Machame Camp (3010m)

We leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, we pass through heather and open moorlands, then cross a large river gorge to Shira Camp.

Day 3: Machame Camp (3010m) To Shira Camp (3845M)

We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for acclimatization.

Day 4: Shira Cave (3845m) TO Barranco Camp (3960m)

Our day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley, which is our last stop for fresh water before the summit. Scree now forms the terrain as we walk through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp.

DAY 5: Barranco Camp (3960m) To Barafu Camp (4640m)

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physicallychallenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak– the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4640m) To Uhuru Peak (5895m) & Down To Millennium Camp (3790m)

On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to Moshi Town.

Kilimanjaro Machame Route

6 Days Machame Route

At 8am leave Moshi for Umbwe Gate where you will meet our porters, guides, and cooks who will spend the next six days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. After arriving, wait at the gate while we register your climb and the porters and guides make final preparations. Your first day’s destination is Cave Bivouac Camp, approximately 6 hours from the gate. The trail is steep and can be slippery in some places. Hike through the moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. The forest will thin later in the hike and heathers, tall grasses and wildflowers will come into view. Porters and cooks will walk ahead to set up the camp in time for your arrival.

DAY 2: UMBWE GATE (1,800M/5,905FT) TO CAVE BIVOUAC CAMP (2,850M/9,350FT)

The first section of the trail continues following the ridge. After leaving the forest, continue through open moorlands until reaching Barranco Camp. Barranco is generally regarded as the most scenic campsite on the Umbwe Trail as it’s surrounded by giant senecios and lobelias. As Barranco is in a valley, the sun rises later than at the other camps.

DAY 3: CAVE BIVOUAC (2,850M/9,350FT) TO BARRANCO CAMP (3,950M/12,960FT)

Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with a 1.5 hour scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the day and in some places you may have to use your hands to aid your climb. After reaching the top, hike through fairly level terrain before making a short but steep descent into the green Karanga River Valley.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP (3,950M/12,960FT) TO KARANGA VALLEY (4,200M/13,780FT)

After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo’s glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. During day four, hike by the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to sleep after finishing dinner as you will wake before midnight for your summit hike.

DAY 5: KARANGA VALLEY (4,200M/13,780FT) TO BARAFU CAMP (4,600M/15,100FT)

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers.

At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP (4,600M/15,100FT) TO UHURU PEAK (5,895M/19,340FT) TO MWEKA CAMP (3,100M/10,170FT)

After breakfast, finish the trek with a hike through the forest to Mweka Gate. The trail may be slippery following rain. Our vehicles will meet you at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi.

DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP (3,100M/10,170FT) TO MWEKA GATE (1,500M/4,920FT)

6 Days Umbwe Route

Today starts with a steady hike over small trails. After 2 hours of uphill trekking through beautiful forests and plantations, the view widens up and you will have great overviews of the surrounding hills. On your way you will see lots of flowers and butterflies along the way before you reach your accommodation.

Day 3: Lukozi (1746m) to Rangwi (1913m)

Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 14km

Start your day with a walk to the deep part of the Shagayu Jungle. hike up and down to the small waterfalls called Kadecho Waterfalls.

Walk along the ridge to Mambo View Point

From here you can see Kilimanjaro on a clear day, Tsavo National Parkin Kenya, Mkomazi National Park, Pare Mountains and the two lakes Ndungu and Kihurio.

Overnight at Mambo View Point Lodge

Day 4: Rangwi (1913m) to Mambo Village (1976 m)

Time: 2.5 hrs by car
Distance: 60km

Watch the magical sunrise and enjoy the spectacular view while enjoy a hot tea or coffee before driving back to Lushoto. From here we will take you to the East Usambara Mountains where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Magoroto Lake. If you still have enough energy you can make an easy hike to some waterfalls nearby for swimming or you can relax at the lake to enjoy the sunset.

Day 5: Mambo Village to East Usambara Mountains (via Lushoto)

Time: 2 hours by car
Distance: 15 km

After a nice breakfast near Magoroto Lake it is time to say goodbye to Usambara National Park. We will take you back to Lushoto from where you can continue to Daressalaam or Kilimanjaro.

Day 6: East Usambara Mountains to Lushoto & Departure

You can arrive from Daressalaam 6-8hrs, Moshi 6 hrs or Arusha 8 hrs

Change from Mombo to Lushoto. We will pick you up in Lushoto and take you to Mkuzi village by private transfer. You will enter Magamba rainforest where you can visit the German Cave and Kigulu Peak. On your way you can spot numerous black and white colobus monkeys. You can also find chameleons and hundreds of species of butterflies.

Overnight at Mullers Mountain Lodge

Day  Arrival in Mkuzi (1564 m) via Lushoto

Shortly after leaving your accommodation, you will stop at the beautiful Mkuzi Waterfalls. You can enjoy the sound of the water and watch the magical scenery of this serene paradise. After a nice stop at the waterfalls, you can continue your hike on a small path through the KJ forest. At some villages you might stop to try locally brewed banana beers. The path itself offers some beautiful viewpoints as you hike up and down small winding trails until you reach Lukozi Village for overnight.
